The overall pet food market in the UK us a substantial market in its own right.

In 2000 it was worth around £1.1billion.

In 2005 it was worth almost £1.5billion.

In only 5 Years it has increased by about 37%, of which an estimated value of £30million is dog treats.

There has been an increase in pet supplies outlets (Pet Super Stores) in retail business parks next to the Superstores.

Amongst other pet foods and accessories, the main products are dry meals and treats for dogs.

Complete dog food and dry meals are an everyday product which are purchased in large quantities of 20kg, and last about a week or so, depending on the size of the dog.

Dog treats however are purchased purely on impulse and are not purchased in large quantity.

Whereas the local shops stock a good selection of tinned dog food, and sell "quite a bit"

- But don't stock Dog Treats!

80% of shops do stock Dog Treats, but only a very small selection of one or two types, mainly munchie sticks, offered for sale from an old cardboard box on the floor out of sight.

The lack of variety and display is why local shops are missing out on this massive growing market.

DON'T MISS OUT!
